What a Smart Lock Can Do

Smart locks, also known as identification locks, serve the function of determining and recognizing the identity of authorized users. It employs various methods to achieve this, including biometrics, passwords, cards, and mobile apps. Let's delve into each of these methods.

Biometrics:

Biometrics involves using human biological characteristics for identification purposes. Currently, the most commonly used biometric methods are fingerprint, face, and finger vein recognition. Among them, fingerprint recognition is the most widespread, while face recognition has gained popularity since the latter half of 2019.

When considering biometrics, there are three important indicators to consider during the selection and purchase of a smart lock.

The first indicator is efficiency, which encompasses both the speed and accuracy of recognition. Accuracy, specifically the false reject rate, is a crucial aspect to focus on. In essence, it determines whether the smart lock can accurately and swiftly recognize your fingerprint.

The second indicator is security, which consists of two factors. The first factor is the false accept rate, where the fingerprints of unauthorized individuals are incorrectly recognized as authorized fingerprints. This occurrence is rare in smart lock products, even among low-end and low-quality locks. The second factor is anti-copying, which involves safeguarding your fingerprint information and removing any objects that could be used to manipulate the lock.

The third indicator is the user capacity. Presently, most smart lock brands allow for the input of 50-100 fingerprints. It is advisable to register 3-5 fingerprints for each authorized user to prevent fingerprint-related issues when opening and closing the smart lock.

Password:

Passwords involve using numeric combinations for identification purposes. The strength of a smart lock password is determined by the length of the password and the presence of vacant digits. It is recommended to have a password length of at least six digits, with the number of vacant digits falling within a reasonable range, usually around 30 digits.

Card:

The card function of a smart lock is complex, encompassing features such as active, passive, coil, and CPU cards. However, for consumers, it is sufficient to understand two types: M1 and M2 cards, which refer to encryption cards and CPU cards, respectively. The CPU card is considered the most secure but may be more cumbersome to use. Nonetheless, both types of cards are commonly utilized in smart locks. When evaluating cards, the crucial aspect to consider is their anti-copying properties, while appearance and quality can be disregarded.

Mobile App:

The network function of a smart lock is multifaceted, primarily resulting from the integration of the lock with mobile devices or network terminals like smartphones or computers. The identification-related functions of mobile apps include network activation, network authorization, and smart home activation. Smart locks with network capabilities typically incorporate a built-in Wi-Fi chip and do not require a separate gateway. However, those lacking Wi-Fi chips necessitate the presence of a gateway.

It's important to note that while some locks can connect to mobile phones, not all of them have network functions. Conversely, locks with network capabilities will invariably connect to mobile phones, such as TT locks. In the absence of a nearby network, the lock can establish a Bluetooth connection with the mobile phone, enabling the use of several functions. However, certain advanced features like information push still require the assistance of a gateway.

Therefore, when selecting a smart lock, it is crucial to carefully consider the identification methods employed by the lock and choose the one that best suits your needs.
